Uki xx

In November 2007 the Uki Village & District Residents’ Association (UKIRA) formed a local branch of Neighbourhood Watch.

Hooning, fuelled by alcohol and drugs, had gotten out of hand and the community had had enough. It was hoped, therefore, by forming a local Neighbourhood Watch the Police would be more aware of the local scene.

As a result Police presence increased, a number of offenders were arrested and hefty fines issued.

Hoons are certainly still out and about, but the situation has improved considerably since the inception of Neighbourhood Watch.

Uki now has regular Police patrols and Neighbourhood Watch works closely with the Murwillumbah and Tweed
Police as well as the Highway Patrol. In 2009,
in another attempt to curb speeding through the village, Neighbourhood Watch, Uki Primary School and UKIRA were successful in getting Council approval for a raised pedestrian crossing in the main street.

On 17 June 2011 School Watch was officially launched at the Uki Primary School, as another positive step toward reducing anti-social behaviour in the community. The launch was attended by the Police, Neighbourhood Watch representatives from around the Tweed, parents, members of the wider community, staff and students. A performance by the school choir, the cutting of a special cake and a sausage sizzle sponsored by the school P&C all helped to make it a memorable experience for the children.
